Here’s a pattern we’ve watched for over a decade in our Omaha treatment rooms: a client books 60 minutes and says “just do my shoulders — that’s where the problem is.” We work the shoulders. The tension returns in a week. Then they try a total body massage, and suddenly the shoulders hold their improvement. That’s not coincidence — it’s how bodies are wired.
What is a total body massage?
A total body massage is a session that systematically addresses the major muscle groups — back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, feet, and often scalp — rather than concentrating on a single region. In full body massage therapy, the therapist can follow tension patterns wherever they lead, because your “shoulder problem” frequently starts in your hips, your breathing pattern, or the way you sit.
Why does full body work often outperform spot treatment?
Muscles operate in chains. Tight hips change how your low back moves; a stiff low back recruits the shoulders; the shoulders recruit the neck. Treat only the endpoint and the chain re-tightens it within days. Treat the chain and the endpoint finally gets to rest. This is the core of the “fix-it” philosophy our owner Shelah Hinton has built the practice around since 2010: find the underlying cause, not just the loudest symptom. It’s also why our signature integrative massage blends techniques within one session — the body doesn’t organize itself by service menu, so neither do we.
What are the benefits of a full body relaxing massage?
Beyond the chain-of-tension logic, whole-body sessions deliver something targeted work can’t: a full nervous-system downshift. The Mayo Clinic’s overview of massage therapy notes massage is commonly used to help reduce stress and muscle tension — and in our experience, that stress-reduction effect is strongest when the whole body gets the signal that it’s safe to let go, not just one quadrant of it.
Clients typically report:
- Deeper relaxation than spot sessions provide
- Improvement in areas they didn’t realize were tight
- Better sleep the night after
- Longer-lasting relief in their primary problem area
How long should a total body massage be?
Sixty minutes covers the full body at a purposeful pace. Ninety minutes is where the session breathes — enough time to cover everything and linger where your body needs extra attention. If you’re choosing between a rushed 60 covering everything and a 90 that does it properly, we’ll always recommend the 90 for total body wellness goals. Can total body massage be customized?
It should be — that’s the difference between a wellness center and an assembly line. Want full-body coverage but extra time on your low back? Prefer we skip an area entirely? Want heated stone work folded in from our hot stone therapy? All of that is a normal conversation at booking, not a special request.
Total body massage FAQs
Do I have to undress fully? No. You undress to your comfort level and remain professionally draped throughout — only the area being worked is uncovered.
Is it deep or gentle? Your choice, and it can vary by region: firmer through the back, gentler on the legs, for example.
How often should I book? Monthly is the most common rhythm for maintenance; more often during high-stress stretches.
